Biodegradable bags are bags that are capable of being decomposed by bacteria or other living organisms. Each year approximately 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are used worldwide. Biodegradable plastics take three to six months to decompose fully. That's much quicker than synthetic counterparts that take several hundred years. Exactly how long a biodegradable bag takes to break down depends on various factors, such as temperature and the amount of moisture present. In landfill, biodegradable and compostable bags will break down a lot more slowly than they would in your home composting system, and they will break down without oxygen, producing methane, a greenhouse gas much more dangerous than carbon dioxide. Biodegradable bags do not break down in marine environments at all.


Plastic that is compostable is biodegradable, but not every plastic that is biodegradable is compostable. Whereas biodegradable plastic may be engineered to biodegrade in soil or water, compostable plastic refers to biodegradation into soil conditioning material (i.e., compost) under a certain set of conditions. Certified compostable bags can be used to collect compostable material and are allowed in the compost cart. Otherwise, bags that are only labeled “biodegradable” typically contain conventional plastic and need to go in the landfill cart.
